Monty Python, Fawlty towers, your advocacy for free speech and freedom from intolerant, toffee-nosed, maloderous, upper-class twits are very important to me ... but I think your statement is sloppy. Reductionism is a powerful technique. It is what physicists like me do. I try to understand lightning for a living, and we are on the way to "reducing" it to water-ice tribology, electromagnetic fields, excitation energies, vibrational state lifetimes, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The subtlety of this phenomenon has increased the spiritual awe in which I hold it. It has not cheapenened it. The research we do, in which a kid from rural New Mexico sometimes causes rheir very own lightning flash, is often a peak experience. Students who are impossibly confused by the miserable politicians and businessmen currently running the US find answers and purpose in the clarity and challenge of natural philosophy. I believe what you meant to say was "materialism and reductionism in economics and politics is unsustainable". I accept your apology, m'lord.
I similarly meet doctors who say its amazing that magnets can help joint pain but they have no idea why. I tell them that there is a radical named Harvey who claims blood circulates through the body with all the nutrition and a lot of iron.
I had Lord Cleese pegged as a stereotypical over-rich celtic fundamentalist apostle of Jeremy Bentham with a stiff upper lip. I also read that he was knighted by royal lemurs. I decided to subscribe after reading some Cleese output here. i now realize appearances can be deceiving. Perhaps Lord Cleese may even be amused by my article coming out in a few weeks. Working title is:
"I have a dream: Pan-Palestine Partnership. Whether one fish or two -- Israel and Palestine can choose to continue a 3-millennia Hatfield feud -- or become world leaders together."
